This original hand-coloured steel-engraving depicts the Jewish Feast of Purim celebrated in a grand 18th-century synagogue interior filled with congregants in period dress. It measures 5.5 x 7.25 inches and was sourced from “Faiths of the World”. > A spacious, high-domed sanctuary lined with tall columns and ornate chandeliers. At centre, two figures stand behind the reading desk, while groups of men, women and children gather around, reading from scrolls and conversing in vibrant coats and gowns. > Transcription of all text found: > - “The Jewish Feast of Purim or Lots.” > - “IN 1712.” > - “R. Picart” (lower left) > - “W. Forrest” (lower right) Produced on good quality paper with hand-coloured wash over a steel-engraved plate. Light foxing.
