1959 Devonshire Cup-Corals Marine Photography Print - Common Prawn Sponge Crab - Underwater Sea Life Photography 5 x 8.25 in
This is an original marine life photography print featuring Devonshire Cup-corals and on the reverse a Common prawn and a Sponge crab with mass of sponge. The images were photographed by D. P. Wilson, a renowned underwater photographer and marine biologist.
The main image (Plate 11) showcases a stunning cluster of Devonshire Cup-corals attached to rock, with their vibrant orange bodies and delicate white tentacles beautifully captured against a dark underwater background. The reverse plate (Plate 12) shows a Common prawn on a rocky surface, and a Sponge crab partially concealed by a rock with a distinctive yellow sponge mass.

**Background**
Sourced from The New Naturalist The Sea Shore by C.M. Yonge, Regius professor of zoology in the University of Glasgow, published 1959 by Readers Union Collins. D. P. Wilson was a pioneering underwater photographer who developed specialized techniques for capturing marine life in their natural environments, often working in challenging conditions to document these rarely-seen underwater worlds.
Devonshire cup-corals (Caryophyllia smithii) are actually not true corals but solitary anemones that build cup-shaped limestone skeletons, making them unique among British marine fauna.
