1976 Red Bellied Woodpecker Original Vintage Print from Natural History c.1768 - Mark Catesby-Seligmann - Ornithology Bird - 11.75 x 17.5 in
Superb hand-coloured etching of a red-bellied woodpecker by Mark Catesby from his work The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahamas Islands. Originally published in 2 volumes between 1731 and 1743. It is one of the earliest works to document the flora and fauna of North America. The text on the image includes “Tab. XXXVII”, that is to say Plate 37. The German text in English says: The woodpecker with the red stomach.
Thick cream-coloured canson paper. This 1976 edition was published in Paris of only 1470 copies printed, this is a faithful vintage reproduction of the Nuremberg edition of 1768.
Condition: Good, commensurate with age. Any imperfections in original reproduced. Reverse blank except for “1976” in pencil. No show through.
