This print shows a fantastical-looking insect belonging to the Coreidae family, which includes around 2,000 species. Their shiny integuments, brownish-yellow in color, have a leathery appearance. The insect shown here is decorated with an elegant pattern made of white lines (albolineata). The hind legs of the males have a broad, flat part resembling a leaf. Their color resembles that of autumn foliage. The reason for these extravagant ornaments remains to be discovered.
These insects sucks sap from leaves and young shoots, which quickly wither due to their saliva. They inject their saliva into the plant while sucking it. They are very active and flee at the slightest alert. When they are not seen, they are betrayed by their smell.
Anisoscelis flavolineata was classified by Blanchard in 1849. He described it as a new species within the genus . Later it was placed as a junior synonym of Anisoscelis alipes.
**Background**
The artist Bernard Durin was an artist and illustrator transforming the tiniest creatures into works of art. Born in France in 1940, "Beetles and Other Insects," was published in 1980. He made around 60 portraits of insects, using rare and fascinating specimens entrusted to him by the entomologists of the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Durin’s work combines scientific precision with artistic beauty. This has made them valuable to entomologists and other scientists. Bernard Durin passed away in 1988.
