The forward-pointing antennae of the longhorn beetle, longicorn, or long-horned beetle are striking. The mage shows a male with the antennae in a natural posture. The animal uses them for sensing. The antennae are directed backward here so it takes up less space in collections and remains undamaged. The length of the Anoplophora horsfieldi is about 3 cm, and the male’s antennae are even slightly longer. The Englishman Hope, who described the beetle in 1842 and gave it its name, was so impressed by its appearance that he had a detailed colored illustration included with its first publication in 1845. This vividly blue and black patterned beetle originates from Assam, China, and Formosa (now Taiwan). Later, the species was included in the genus Cryptea along with several other species from Burma, Shanghai, and the island of Nias. Today, the group is considered a subgenus of Anoplophora. Closely related is the Oriental genus Monochamus, from the Holarctic Bockkäfer group, which includes 11 species in North America, and whose 14 Eurasian representatives can be harmful to timber in their larval stages. Frederick William Hope is credited with describing and naming the beetle species Anoplophora horsfieldii, according to GBIF (the Global Biodiversity Information Facility). He named it in honour of Thomas Horsfield, a fellow entomologist and curator. The species was first described in 1842 and is a type of longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae).  **Background** The artist Bernard Durin was an artist and illustrator transforming the tiniest creatures into works of art. Born in France in 1940, "Beetles and Other Insects," was published in 1980. It is considered a masterpiece. Durin has captured the intricate patterns, textures, and colours of his subjects with stunning accuracy. He made around 60 portraits of insects, using rare and fascinating specimens entrusted to him by the entomologists of the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Durin’s work combines scientific precision with artistic beauty. This has made them valuable to entomologists and other scientists. Bernard Durin passed away in 1988. His illustrations continue to be admired for their beauty and precision, and they remain a valuable resource for anyone interested in the natural world. **About Your Purchase:** - Your purchase is this ORIGINAL vintage print.
