The Euchirinae, called "long-armed scarabs" are a subfamily of scarab beetles, comprising only 12 known species across three genera. With one exception, all these species originate from Southeast Asia: Formosa, the Philippines, Ceram, the Celebes, the Moluccas, China, Vietnam, and northern India. The only exception to this distribution is a species recently reported from Turkey (Asia Minor), which extends its range westward as far as Greece and Yugoslavia. After the glaciations, this species was found isolated from the others in newly formed deserts. All the Euchirus show marked sexual dimorphism: the front legs of the males are abnormally long, while those of the females are normal. The species magnificently illustrated by Dürst is Cheirotonus macleayi, measuring 6 cm long and originally from northern India. The thorax, a brilliant metallic green, is bordered with fringes of red hairs like those of a fox’s tail. The elytra are also green, adorned with coppery spots or patterns. The scarab feeds on the sap of plants and is thus often seen in the company of many stag beetles, sucking the sap that flows from tree trunks. These scarabs are also found in hollow trees and build cocoons from wood fibers. The naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913) reports that Euchirus longimanus, a species from Ambon, sucked the sap from tree wounds like Arenocarcinus sachalinensis. It is hardly surprising that today their habits are better known. It was not until the Euchirus turc species was discovered in 1960 that it has since been observed several times by entomologists. **Background** The artist Bernard Durin was an artist and illustrator transforming the tiniest creatures into works of art. Born in France in 1940, "Beetles and Other Insects," was published in 1980. It is considered a masterpiece. Durin has captured the intricate patterns, textures, and colours of his subjects with stunning accuracy. He made around 60 portraits of insects, using rare and fascinating specimens entrusted to him by the entomologists of the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Durin’s work combines scientific precision with artistic beauty. This has made them valuable to entomologists and other scientists. Bernard Durin passed away in 1988. His illustrations continue to be admired for their beauty and precision, and they remain a valuable resource for anyone interested in the natural world. **About Your Purchase:** - Your purchase is this ORIGINAL vintage print.
