There are about 6,000 species, making them one of the largest, most beautiful, and most morphologically diverse families of bugs. They possess a great visual appeal, which has earned the family the name "shield bugs." Head and thorax are fused together to form a triangle. The typical feature of bugs is the forewing. These are not uniformly hardened like beetles, but about half of each is thickened (leathery) at the base, while the tip is membranous and transparent, similar to flies. This forewing covers the leathery hindwings and the back. Characteristic for bugs are their piercing-sucking mouthparts. These are transformed into a suction proboscis, which is attached to the front of the head and can be folded under the body at rest. They use it to suck plant sap. Only a small group of about 200 species is not plant-based and preys on other insects. Carpocoris fuscispinus belongs to the plant-feeding group. It can emit an unpleasant smell, released by glands located on the side of the thorax. This secretion is meant to ward off enemies (toxic), and even its territorial enemies are discouraged. It seeps through the cuticula (outer skin of the insect) and impedes enemies’ attacks. The insect is hardly edible, as this secretion penetrates the respiratory openings (tracheae) and deters predators. Carpocoris fuscispinus is 11 to 15 mm long. It is referred to as a Central European species. In Central Europe, it is found almost everywhere; in the Mediterranean region, it prefers mountainous areas. Carl Henrik Boheman was a Swedish entomologist. His publications include: • Insecta Caffrariae annis 1838–1845 a J.A. Wahlberg collecta. Coleoptera. Holmiae : Fritze & Norstedt Vol. 1 8 + 625 pp.(1851). • Monographia Cassididarum (in four parts) He is credited with describing and naming Carpocoris fuscispinus. He described the species in 1851. **Background** The artist Bernard Durin was an artist and illustrator transforming the tiniest creatures into works of art. Born in France in 1940, "Beetles and Other Insects," was published in 1980. It is considered a masterpiece. Durin has captured the intricate patterns, textures, and colours of his subjects with stunning accuracy. He made around 60 portraits of insects, using rare and fascinating specimens entrusted to him by the entomologists of the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Durin’s work combines scientific precision with artistic beauty. This has made them valuable to entomologists and other scientists. Bernard Durin passed away in 1988. His illustrations continue to be admired for their beauty and precision, and they remain a valuable resource for anyone interested in the natural world. **About Your Purchase:** - Your purchase is this ORIGINAL vintage print.
