This original hand-coloured print depicts two striking roller birds – the Bengal Roller (Coracias bengalensis) and the Garrulous Roller (Coracias garrula) – perched and in profile. It measures 8.5 x 5.25 in and was sourced from the “Animal Kingdom” series. Published c.1835 by G. Henderson at 2 Old Bailey, London.
This finely detailed engraving shows:
> • A full-length Bengal Roller with iridescent blues and greens and distinctive reddish throat stripes.
> • A Garrulous Roller below, in muted teals and browns.
> • Insets of beak and tail feather diagrams labelled “1.a”, “1.b”, “2.a”, “2.b”.
