Background
Artist/engraver. ALEXANDER FRANCIS LYDON (1836/1837 – 1917) was an Irish-born British watercolour artist, illustrator and engraver of natural history and landscapes. He worked for Benjamin Fawcett the printer, to whom he had been apprenticed from an early age.
“Tenuirostres” refers to a grouping of slender-billed insectivorous birds first described by Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1820, marking a pivotal moment in systematic ornithology.
> e.g. “Temminck’s classification of the Tenuirostres in 1820 represented one of the earliest efforts to distinguish insect-eating bird families.”
