This original hand-coloured print depicts a cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) and the common pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) in elegant profile. From the National Encyclopedia, a Dictionary of Universal Knowledge c1880
> In muted umber and slate tones, a sleek cormorant stands atop a sandy shoreline, its plumage rendered in rich dark hues, while below, the stately white pelican unfurls one wing, showcasing delicate blue-gray shading and a vivid ochre bill. Fine cross-hatching and stippling accentuate feather texture and subtle shading.
