Background
This chromolithograph is from a work by Richard Bowdler-Sharpe (1847 - 1909), A HAND-BOOK TO THE BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAINan. Bowdler-Sharpe was an English zoologist in the British Museum. In 1892 he was founder the British Ornithologists' Club. His work on birds contained accurate, colourful lithographs showing the birds in their habitual natural scenery. This print is an original antique, not a reproduction. It was made in 1896/7. It is in excellent condition. The Egyptian Vulture is renowned for its remarkable use of tools—They find a suitable pebble, often rounded rather than jagged, and repeatedly drop it onto the eggshell, eventually cracking it open. This behavior is not learned by watching other vultures but is considered innate, triggered by the association of eggs with food and access to pebbles.
