1838 Aves Birds Print - Ornithological Bird Studies - Jacana, Flamingo, Sheathbill & Screamer - 10.5 x 8.25 in
This original hand-coloured print depicts various waterbirds and shorebirds including the Chinese Jacana, Horned Screamer and Flamingo. Published in February 1838 by B. Fellows at Tavistock Street, London.
> The print presents seven finely rendered hand-coloured birds set within a gilt border. At the top centre “AVES.” appears, with the Latinate genera “Parra, Palamedea, Megapodius, Porphyrio, Chionis, Glareola, Phoenicopterus” listed beneath and “Family: Macrochactyle” at top right. Illustrations include:
> - Parr. Chinensis … Chinese Jacana (on lily pads)
> - Pal. Cornuta … Horned Screamer
> - M. Freycineti … Freycinet’s Mudbird
> - Porph. Pulverulentus … Porphyrio species
> - C. Necrophaga … White Sheathbill

> Plate “20” is at top right; “Mrs Holmes delin.” at bottom left; “J M Lowry sculp.” at bottom right. The imprint “Published Feby, 1838 by B. Fellows, Tavistock Street.” sits centred below the plate.
Produced on archival cream paper.
The reverse is blank apart from a pencilled “34” at centre; no annotations or show-through.

Background
Drawn by a Mrs Holmes and engraved by J.W. Lowry, published by B. Fellows, a prominent London publisher of natural history prints in the early 19th century, known for producing detailed hand-coloured engravings that catered to both scientific study and decorative display.
