1859 Clouded Yellow & Pale Clouded Yellow Butterflies - Hand-Coloured Lithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, Plate II - 7 x 10.4 in
Antique hand-coloured lithograph depicting Clouded Yellow (Colias edusa) and Pale Clouded Yellow (Colias hyale) butterflies among thistles and wildflowers. Page measures 7 × 10.4 in.
Plate identification: PL. 2.
Nine numbered specimens include male, female and variety forms in vivid orange, yellow and black against a grey botanical background. An accompanying descriptive text leaf provides the Plate II key and text on the genus Colias.
This original hand-coloured lithograph comes from the 1859 first edition of The Genera and Species of British Butterflies by Henry Noel Humphreys, published in London by Paul Jerrard and Son. The book contains 32 hand-coloured plates showing British butterflies and their life stages, often accompanied by caterpillars, pupae and food plants. As a visual record of nineteenth-century British lepidoptera, the work provides an important baseline record of extinct and vanished species, including the Large Copper, Black-veined White and Mazarine Blue.
Suited to entomology collectors, Victorian natural history enthusiasts and butterfly art displays.
