Ugada giovanrinnae is found in Central Africa and belongs to the singing cicadas. Cicadas are plant sap suckers. The short antennae are bristle-like, "bristle-horned." Besides the two insect-typical compound eyes, there are also three ocelli arranged in a triangle on the head, along with indentations, dots, grooves, notches—structures known as subocular ridges. All of these names sound highly technical. These additional light-sensitive organs help with orientation, though it’s not yet certain exactly how. Also clearly visible is the massive middle thorax, which houses the enormous flight musculature for the front and most important pair of wings. The hind wings remain hidden under the large front pair and move passively with them. At rest, the wings are folded roof-like over the abdomen. The opened wings give a view of the hind body. On both sides of the first abdominal segment is a shell-like bulge, unique to male cicadas. Inside this resonating chamber is a thin membrane and a special muscle. When the muscle contracts, the membrane buckles inward; upon release, it springs back. This vibration creates sound. A large air-filled cavity in the abdomen, acting as a resonating chamber, amplifies the tone. **Background** The artist Bernard Durin was an artist and illustrator transforming the tiniest creatures into works of art. Born in France in 1940, "Beetles and Other Insects," was published in 1980. It is considered a masterpiece. Durin has captured the intricate patterns, textures, and colours of his subjects with stunning accuracy. He made around 60 portraits of insects, using rare and fascinating specimens entrusted to him by the entomologists of the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Durin’s work combines scientific precision with artistic beauty. This has made them valuable to entomologists and other scientists. Bernard Durin passed away in 1988. His illustrations continue to be admired for their beauty and precision, and they remain a valuable resource for anyone interested in the natural world. **About Your Purchase:** - Your purchase is this ORIGINAL vintage print.
