Its name honours Baron Maurice de Rothschild, well known in entomological circles and whose collections of beetles from East Africa are held at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.
Lampropepla rothschildi has a length of 46 mm and a width of 15 mm. Its elytra, violet or purple, are bordered with longitudinal grooves whose intervals are speckled with dark spots. The thorax, in particular, is adorned with sumptuous colours, green or bluish. Its median line is marked by a deep longitudinal groove; the rest of its surface is speckled with large dots. Deep depressions, yellowish in colour, are found on each side. These depressions are smooth and shiny, bluish or purple and oval-shaped, occupying the front of the sides.
This species forms, with another, Lampropepla ophthalmica, whose size does not exceed 38 mm but which has an equally sumptuous appearance, a genus whose distribution is limited to Madagascar. The endemic genes contained in the Malagasy fauna define some zoogeographic affinities to consider, such as the presence of a peculiar fauna; however, elements common to the African region show that Madagascar must also be placed under the African region, more specifically the Ethiopian region.
**Background**
The artist Bernard Durin was an artist and illustrator transforming the tiniest creatures into works of art. Born in France in 1940, "Beetles and Other Insects," was published in 1980. It is considered a masterpiece. Durin has captured the intricate patterns, textures, and colours of his subjects with stunning accuracy. He made around 60 portraits of insects, using rare and fascinating specimens entrusted to him by the entomologists of the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Durin’s work combines scientific precision with artistic beauty. This has made them valuable to entomologists and other scientists. Bernard Durin passed away in 1988. His illustrations continue to be admired for their beauty and precision, and they remain a valuable resource for anyone interested in the natural world.
