The specific name he gave it literally means "peppery-winged grasshopper." Visibly, Descamps was thinking of the extreme tips of the posterofemora of the males, which look like great grains of pepper. The hind femurs, for the most part, are brown, spotted, and more or less black on their shiny surface, as if they had been sprinkled with pepper, which further enhances their resemblance to the fruit. This grasshoppper has, however, been found not only in South America but also in Africa and Asia, where there are similar species. The most famous, due to its size and colour, is the "Giant Rainbow Cricket" (Zonocerus elegans), which is found in Central and South America and, in Germany, is called the giant peppered cricket. The Eucriotettix piperacicus described by Descamps is closely related. The two main localities where it is found are the region of Pucallpa in Peru and French Guiana. The use of colours is also one of the most common characteristics in all grasshoppers. The three main parts where they are found are the hind legs, the wings, and the thorax, but in this cricket, the thighs are bordered by wide yellow bands, the antennae and forelegs are brown, while the shinbones (tibiae) are bright yellow or orange. The colouring of the wings is not less striking: they are covered with concentric black bands on a red background, resembling the grains of pepper. Finally, the most noticeable and unique detail is found at the ends of the thighs, which have small black spines **Background** The artist Bernard Durin was an artist and illustrator transforming the tiniest creatures into works of art. Born in France in 1940, "Beetles and Other Insects," was published in 1980. It is considered a masterpiece. Durin has captured the intricate patterns, textures, and colours of his subjects with stunning accuracy. He made around 60 portraits of insects, using rare and fascinating specimens entrusted to him by the entomologists of the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Durin’s work combines scientific precision with artistic beauty. This has made them valuable to entomologists and other scientists. Bernard Durin passed away in 1988. His illustrations continue to be admired for their beauty and precision, and they remain a valuable resource for anyone interested in the natural world. **About Your Purchase:** - Your purchase is this ORIGINAL vintage print.
