Cicindela chinensis was named by Charles De Geer. He described and named the species in his work "Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des insectes" in 1774, specifically in the fourth volume. The species name is often cited as "Cicindela chinensis DeGeer, 1774". Sand or Tiger beetles are strikingly colourful creatures. The Chinese Sand or Tiger eetle, in particular, is very striking with its shimmering green, blue, and copper-coloured wing covers. The bright violet of the neck shield and rear part of the head and thorax is so intense that it almost seems like it was painted on with Chinese porcelain. Even the tips of the ocher-coloured mandibles appear dipped in gold. Because of their slender build, they are also called tiger beetles in English. The term “sand beetle,” which is more common in German, refers to their habitat. You can find them on sandy ground, in sand dunes, or on the sandy banks of rivers or the sea. They are especially active in the heat of midday sunshine. Sand beetles are classified as a subfamily of ground beetles (Carabidae), from which they differ in both behaviour and habitat. They are typically diurnal, unlike most other ground beetles that prefer shaded, damp areas. As the name implies, this beetle is native to China, but it also appears sporadically in Japan and Korea. **Background** The Artist. Bernard Durin was an artist and illustrator transforming the tiniest creatures into works of art. Born in France in 1940, "Beetles and Other Insects," was published in 1980. It is considered a masterpiece. Durin has captured the intricate patterns, textures, and colours of his subjects with stunning accuracy. He made around 60 portraits of insects, using rare and fascinating specimens entrusted to him by the entomologists of the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Durin’s work combines scientific precision with artistic beauty. This has made them valuable to entomologists and other scientists. Bernard Durin passed away in 1988. His illustrations continue to be admired for their beauty and precision, and they remain a valuable resource for anyone interested in the natural world. **About Your Purchase:** - Your purchase is this ORIGINAL vintage print.
