This original engraved print depicts the Puff-backed Bush Shrike perched on a tree against a panoramic landscape. It measures 7 x 5 inches and was sourced from an early 19th-century ornithology folio. Published around 1837 by a London publisher. A finely detailed black-and-white engraving of a Puff-backed Bush Shrike (Malaconotus lugubris) standing on a textured tree trunk, with hatched foliage overhead and a distant African-inspired landscape visible beyond. Transcribed text: “PLATE 23.” (top centre) “PUFF-BACKED BUSH SHR IKE.” (bottom centre) Engraver’s signature “Lizars SC” at lower right of image. Condition: Good antique condition with light foxing, slight toning around the margins, slight crease laterally in the middle of the print, minor edge wear. Hinge mark creasing where removed from book, which is not visible in the mount. Tape along top edge where fixed into mount. “1837” and “24” written on the reverse.
