This original hand-coloured print depicts Vaillant’s Darter and the White Gannet in elegant poses. It measures 9.5 x 6.25 in and was sourced from the National Encyclopaedia: A Dictionary of Universal Knowledge. Published by William Mackenzie in 1880.
The fine engraving shows:
> A sleek dark “Plotus Le Vaillantii. Le Vaillant’s Darter” standing on a grassy bank, its slender neck curved gracefully.
> Below, a poised “Sula alba. White Gannet” rendered in soft greys and whites.
> At top: “PELECANIDÆ.” and “Plate 2.” Bottom left: “Vol. 10.”
Produced on good quality paper.
Verso: blank with light pencil scribbles and tape residue along the upper and lower edges. Bottom corners torn/clipped but do not effect display when mounted.

Background
Sula alba, the White Gannet, is renowned for its spectacular plunge-diving hunting method and impressive wingspan reaching nearly two metres. Plotus Le Vaillantii, known as Vaillant’s Darter, is celebrated for its elongated neck and freshwater fishing technique.
